Settings tweaked. I did not get it that Overthink Tank is a wraparound publication that includes Polite Robot, Beautiful Hangover and Secret Diary too. I assumed they were all separate in SubStackLand. Getting notifications on all now.
I don't care where you draw lines around your writing or if you ever draw lines and attach labels at all. They allegedly have drawn lines to mark how much of the woods out back that I own, but I have yet to actually see one of them. I think they are fantastical creations codified into law but that does not make them any more real. Real life doesn't have lines, though sometimes we must draw them (ooh, boundaries). But I think if it doesn't need a line, then don't draw it.
Thanks Elise! I don't think I got it, either. I get so confused by technology, hence making a bit of a mess of the whole sections/situation here... But you're right, it's too high a bar to be able to separate all these pieces off perfectly. And it's completely unlike life/the human heart/brain...
Ooooh, your woods sounds nice. Where are you based? Wild to be able to own trees isn't it???
Coastal South Carolina. The little hundred acre woods I share with my neighbors is underwater 1/2 of the year but still a delight to have and lots of critters love it. Foxes, the rare bear or boar, dozens of deer, possums, racoons. No gators, but mosquitos though. Someone's pet goat and potbelly pig freely wander the neighborhood.
Wow, how amazing is that for us to get to chat on here. I don't love everything about life in the 21st century, but this ease of connection across the miles is pretty incredible. Underwater half the year, so it looks swampy... Maybe like the landscape of that book - Where the Crawdads Sing - did you read it?
Bears and boars! Even if rare, it all sounds WONDERFUL.
I've not read Where the Crawdads Sing but I'm familiar with it. Same idea but less water. We're atop a geographic feature called an Ocean Bay. Very large sand dune left behind by the retreat of the ocean many thousands of years ago. The peak ridge of it has an indentation that fills with water in the rainy season and drains off the rest of the year. We're well above the local water table. No crawdads or fish unfortunately.
How fascinating. I would love to see a picture of this. Oh yeah, the internet! I will look it up. Must be strange to live in a place that is submerged half the year... I wonder where all the creatures go then.
I write about the same two topics (plus many other random things that pop into my head) so I am here for it all. Plus, I'm not really about those perfectly branded Substacks that speak of one topic and one topic alone for the rest of eternity. I want the messiness of being human and all the thoughts that come with that.
Saying that, I do have my own sections but often my letters end up encompassing multiple facets so it's hard to know which section they should go so I don't put them into one.
But, you do you, Chelsey! No matter what, it will be grand. 🖤
Hurray! And I'm with you re the prefectly branded Substacks. I have probably gotten befuddled due to trying to follow guidance from branding experts and then not being able to stick to it. Who knows. Maybe it's more of the creative unmasking, i.e. letting the chaos shine...
Thanks for the support and I hope you are doing well on The Other Side post-diagnosis <3
I’ve struggled with this. Whether to just write what’s on my mind or try to rein it in to my neurodivergence/science/mind beat. I think that after we get enticed by a topic, we keep reading because we’re interested in the person, too. Which is an argument for expanding to cover new territory as well. Anyway, I’m interested in whatever you write about, so no setting tweaks needed over here.
I think I’ve signed up for all the sections now! Really enjoy reading your stuff and excited for more.
Unrelated but I don’t have the app so can no longer private message people it seems - thank you so much for the recommendation and the blurb you wrote, it has absolutely made my week! 💙
What do I know? I’m probably more adhd than you 🤷♀️
Most of what you write so eloquently is heartfelt so crosses over all sections.
I just think that it would help/support your audience more if you were able dive deeper into certain challenges (as you do in life depending what’s happening)
And, of course, some things are so bloody funny they need to go to everyone 🤩
Yes, I think you're right. I just am so scattered with my attention and waste so much time doing god knows what. Reading my Polite Robot posts, I was amazed at the depth I once achieved! Those posts were pre-baby... Maybe I can blame him?
Yes, that's the question, I think... My book covers both, and so it will be interesting to see how it is received! To me, the two have become to seem super-related but of course, I am biased, like everyone...
I definitely used to drink to calm my nerves. Social phobia, actually, I think it was. Without alcohol I'm much less able to manage in large groups and crowds.
Do you have to work hard to not drink too much or are you one of those unicorns who can 'take or leave' alcohol?
I’m no unicorn! I particularly crave a drink after a stressful day or when social interactions are intense and involve someone sharing trauma with me. The only replacement I can have is camomile tea! (I drink a lot of camomile tea).
So some people say it doesn’t affect them at all but I’ve been drinking it since I started having panic attacks during my A Levels at 17 - so more than 20 years! It definitely calms me down and I don’t care if it’s a placebo, I’ll take it! Trying to drink more tea and less alcohol at the moment. May one day move to 0 alcohol but would miss the taste of red wine!
I wouldn't care if it was a placebo either. That is powerful stuff! I must admit I drink a lot of zero percent beer. I love the erdinger. I actually did like the taste of beer I think. Wine, I think I learned to like so I mostly don't miss it. Drinking the sip of cava reminded me how weird and poisonous it tastes! Tho it really could have just been a disgusting version of something that can be nice, I suppose...

Okay, I'm going to try and take your advice : D

How dare you even suggest such a thing? 😠
I guess it depends how much of the audience drink and have neurodivergentness? I like both writings because I drink to calm…

Chamomile tea sounds like a much healthier option! Is it as effective???
