I'm not autistic. (Though I wonder if each of us in some tiny measure might be.) So this newsletter and this particular post are really illuminating and helpful.
Hi Julie, autistic traits appear in the rest of the population, it's just a matter of degree, I believe. Also about the role of the trait. So everyone stims to get rid of excess nervous energy but it is more essential in autistic people and maybe more effective or more relied on. I am just learning myself, tbh. The most autistic thing I experience is the shutdown and meltdown of too much sensory input. I get overwhelmed and malfunction... But sometimes this can happen when to, say my partner, there hasn't been that much stimulus. My brain will stop working and I can no longer make decisions or be nice... I suppose it's this plus the struggle with reading/remembering context. And it all adds up. But naturally there are many crossovers with our experience as we are all human.
I've seen it said that a world that suits autistic people would likely be lovely for nonautistic people too. Many of the reasonable adjustments I asked for at work would be appreciated by many people. I mean, who doesn't like clear and direct instructions for instance?
You might like changes support groups , I have attended many regularly there is no requirement they happen every day on zoom at different times not at weekends .free and a brilliant brilliant place for me.
This was a great read, following #actuallyautistic now :)
Thanks Soph!
